The International Organising Committee (IOC) of the fifth United Nations Day of Vesak (UNDV) has called on Vietnam’s business circle to support the Vesak festival, which is scheduled to be held in Hanoi from May 13-17, 2008.

Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City-based Vietnam Buddhism Institute and IOC Chairman Professor Le Manh That made the appeal at a meeting with the HCM City business circle on April 20.

Deputy PM Khiem has given the nod to the policy to socialise a number of Vesak festival’s activities, he added.

The IOC has so far received more than 10 billion VND in donations for the event, of which almost 9 billion VND has been presented by HCM City businesses.

According to the IOC, 600 delegations from 95 countries and territories with 1,500 Buddhist dignitaries and scholars have registered to take part in the event, which is to be hosted by Vietnam for the first time.

The delegates will join local Buddhist dignitaries, monks and nuns to pray for peace at the closing ceremony.
