National badminton competition to kick off late December

The national badminton championships for the best players will take place from December 22-25 and is expected to draw almost 60 players from 14 teams.

Prizes will be awarded on the men and women singles, men and women doubles, and mixed doubles.

The singles competitions will apply the round-robin rule in the qualifying rounds for four groups and select the best two from each group to move to the next rounds.

In addition to the gold, silver and bronze medals for each and every events, the Hai Yen Sports Company will present individual Cups and awards for players of with the best.

FIFA helps train Vietnamese referees 

A training course for Vietnamese soccer referees was opened in the central city of Da Nang by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).

It draws the attendance of 22 referees and 13 assistants from across the country.

Da Nang city will host another course for 160 referees and 40 supervisors for the country’s 2008 football season from December 24-26.

Athletes with disabilities gather for training 

Disabled athletes taking part in the fourth Para Games in Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima province have been called up for a one-month training course at the National Sports Centre in Hanoi.

Vietnam is sending about 200 athletes, coaches and officials to the games to compete in 14 events, including swimming, Chinese chess, badminton, table tennis and track and field.

The country targets to finish in the top three.

This year’s games, which traditionally follow the SEA Games, will run from January 20-26.

Volleyball teams pocket big bonuses

The men’s and women’s national volleyball teams will be awarded big bonuses from sponsors for their remarkable performances at the 24th Southeast Asian Games.

The men’s team, who won the silver medal will receive VND 200 million (US $12,400) from the Vietnam Volleyball Federation.

After their victory over Thailand in the group stage the federation awarded them US $1,500 and promised a bonus of VND 500 million if they won gold.

It was Vietnamese men’s best performance in volleyball at the SEA Games in their history.

The federation also plans to award VND 50 million to the Vietnamese women, who also brought home a silver medal.
