Hundreds of journalists and sports fans will vote for the athletes and coaches of the year in February 2008.

The annual vote has become an indispensable event in Vietnam’s sporting history over 30 years.

Many of the candidates for awards shone at the Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Thailand earlier this month as well as at the world and Asian championships in 2007.

SEA Games’ athletic winners present at the vote include sprinter Vu Thi Huong, who won golds in the women’s 100m and 200m, Truong Thanh Hang, who won two golds and set two SEA Games records, SEA Games record breakers Vu Van Huyen and Nguyen Dinh Cuong, and women’s high jumper Bui Thi Nhung.

Other candidates are men’s bodybuilder Pham Van Mach, women’s weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thiet, Chinese chess player Ngo Thi Lan Huong, SEA Games taekwondo winner Nguyen Manh Hung, swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet and shooter Tran Thu Van.

The event is jointly organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, Vietnam Fund for Young Talent Support and The Thao Vietnam (Vietnam Sports) newspaper.

Last year, sepak takraw captain Luu Thi Thanh, who helped Vietnam win two gold medals and one silver at the Doha Asian Games last December, was named Vietnam’s most outstanding athlete.
