Ho Chi Minh City welcomed 1.48 million foreign tourists in the first half of the year, a year-on-year rise of 16 percent.

According to the municipal Tourism Department, many of the visitors came from the US , France , Japan , the Republic of Korea , and Australia .

Of the six-month figure, 1.2 million foreign holiday-makers came by air while 21,000 others came by sea, a record figure over the past three years.

The increase in the number of visitors came by land (266,000) is attributable to the completion of the trans-Asia highway and the upgrade of many international bordergates in eastern and southwestern provinces.

The city’s six-month tourism turnover is expected to reach 14.6 trillion VND, a 40 percent increase over the same period last year.

The city is expected to receive 3 million foreign tourists this year.
